Turkish Derby nominee Luca Brasi was put to sleep after terrible accident


Unfortunately, Turkish Derby nominee LUCA BRASI (Victory Gallop - Havin / Rakan) loses his rider Halis Karataş, who won 4006 of his 14082 races since 1996 and the leading jockey of Turkey for 19 years, at the last furlongs of the Mevlana Stakes.



3-year-old son of 1998 Belmont Stakes winner Victory Gallop was in front of his rivals when they turned the last stretch. When he came to the last 2 furlongs, he stumbled suddenly and lost his rider. After this terrible accident, possible Turkish Derby contender LUCA BRASI was euthanized because of his broken legs.



Leading jockey Halis Karataş (@halkaratas) tweeted that his situation was good after the accident and he said: "Thanks to God, I'm fine right now. Thanks for your attention. I'm sorry because of losing such a champion colt."




LUCA BRASI, who debuted impressively with a 3 1/2-length win at Veliefendi Racecourse on May. 16 and then won another two races in Istanbul, has won seven of eight starts while earnings of $278,140. 

Luca Brasi's dam was a Stakes winner HAVIN (Rakan - Saraymeydanlı / Majestic Endeavour). Havin won 14 of her 43 races. 

By the way, EL CONQUERADOR (Okawango - Adhaaba / Dayjur) won the Mevlana Stakes with his jockey Selim Kaya with a degree of 1.30.64.


YEŞEY (Victory Gallop - Siyah Beyaz / Distant Relative) came second, and then SARILAR RUNNER (Okawango - Sarılar Güzeli / Mujtahid) came third.
